No livro “A hora da essência”, o autor analisa a morte na perspectiva de uma paciente e sua relação com uma enfermeira para ensinar a viver melhor, não apenas às vésperas do fim
De pé, Ana. Deitada, Sofia. Enfermeira e paciente. Uma, inteira. A outra, aos pedaços. É a partir deste encontro que o padre Fábio de Melo mergulha em profundas reflexões sobre a morte. O novo livro é, na verdade, uma ode à vida. Em A hora da essência, o sacerdote analisa a importância de reconciliar-se com si mesmo e valorizar a vida antes que seja tarde demais.
Morrer requer liturgia. Da verdade. Viver o rito que nos põe diante de nós. Caem as escamas, vedam-se os caminhos, não sobrando mais respiro para as caricaturas que criamos de nós mesmos. Morrer requer coerência. Fazer o caminho de volta, redescobrir o sabor do manancial da verdade, estar em si, inteiramente reconciliado com as escolhas que lhe tornaram quem é. Quando começa a história de Sofia
A história começa antes mesmo de Sofia conhecer sua companheira de quarto, que espontaneamente, sem mais explicações, decide dedicar parte de suas férias para cuidar da paciente recém-chegada. Internada às pressas, a protagonista se depara com a notícia de que não irá sobreviver ao câncer, diagnosticado inicialmente no pâncreas, mas que acometeu também outros órgãos.
O que tenho é a vida, este tempo verbal enfadonhamente
conjugado pelo meu corpo, fadado ao estreitamento
que me leva a deixar de ser. O que tenho é o doído da solidão.
Saber-se aprisionada em mim. Ninguém a notar o que no interior
do coração se passa. O pensamento sem um espaço para
a partilha. O todo da angústia no estreito do peito. A lágrima
que ninguém vê, o grito que ninguém escuta, a dor que ninguém
percebe. Passado e presente. É com eles que preciso me
ajeitar. O futuro que me espera será tão breve quanto o respiro
que agora realizo. (A hora da essência, p. 38 )
Após estes momentos iniciais de solidão, já com a presença da enfermeira ao seu lado, Sofia passa a refletir sobre o passado, emergindo boas lembranças, mas também às cicatrizes deixadas por escolhas que hoje percebe equivocadas. Após um casamento de muitos anos terminar, ela passou erroneamente a culpar o único filho, que acabou fugindo de casa.
Por conta da doença inesperada, Sofia então não teve tempo de conseguir informações sobre o paradeiro do filho, aumentando o tormento naquele que seria seu leito de morte. Neste processo, ela toma atitudes para recuperar o que havia deixado para trás e encontrar sua verdadeira essência.
Sinopse:
A hora da essência relata a conversa de duas mulheres, uma delas em vias de morrer. Através da conversa entre as duas, padre Fábio propõe uma análise sobre a vida, o que podemos fazer para viver melhor e como é viver a essência – não deixando para cuidar da vida só às vésperas de morrer. Uma das mulheres descobre um câncer incurável, é hospitalizada e, no hospital, conhece uma enfermeira com quem conversa sobre a sua vida, escolhas, etc. E, ainda antes de morrer, toma atitudes para recuperar o que havia deixado para trás ou perdido…

Ele se dedica ao trabalho de evangelização pela arte em diversas áreas de atuação: padre, professor universitário, escritor, cantor e compositor.
